This film was the first to portray werewolves as wolves rather than as very hairy people. The transformation is magnificent and genuinly scary. The triumph of this film is that for a groundbreaking special effects movie, it has a superb script and a great cast. It is silly, funny, horrific and tragic and it goes from one to 'tother in the blink of an eye. And it all fits together as a tight story. Miles better than the much later sequal 'American Werewolf in Paris' (years later and still with inferior special effects...) this film is an absolute gem!

rockett (2 out of 10 )
The people above who gave this film a ten star rating should be locked in a mental institute along with the actors. This film has a poor script and is as romantic as a loaf of bread. Despite some innovative screenplay, the poor quality of this film can not be forgiven.

Limey (9 out of 10 )
Rockett, you must be having a laugh mate! Some of the most ground-breaking monster make-up techniques were used in this film. It's full of black humour, it's atmospheric at times and the transformation of David into the werewolf is simply excruciating to behold. It's the yardstick for all modern monster movies.

I must agree with Limey. This film is bloody brilliant. I loved it. Sure it was made back in 1980 so it's a little dated. You have to admit that the effects are groundbreaking. Obviously rockett you have no appreciation for classic horror you probably are not even old enough to have remembered the year 1980. Am I right?

My favourite horror film of all time. It's the only "classic" sort of film I like, and it genuinely scares the hell out of me. I love the humour (Little kid saying the naked american man stole his balloons) and it's counterbalanced just enough for me with the horror. I don't think any CGI was used in that film, or none I could clearly see, and the prosthetics are a thing of wonder. You know this film inspired Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video, right?

First saw this in the cinema on its original release and every day for a fortnight. Owned the video when it was released and soon wore it out. Got every version of the DVDs and cannot praise this wonderful film highly enough. It has everything you want from a film - irrespective of its genre as the film is so much more than a werewolf film. When it came out Barry Norman didn't like it at all and it was his daughter that converted him. The ground-breaking transformation sequence into the werewolf won Rick Baker an Oscar and rightly so. It was way ahead of its time and has never been bettered.

B movie. Not exceptional, has a modern sassy quality. Not much goes on plot-wise. Focuses on nightmares rather than the wolf.
